IATA unanimously votes to support the RFID rollout for baggage traceability

Sub Heading
RFID bagage set for global deployment

Early June 2019 in Seoul, the 75th Annual General Meeting (AGA) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) unanimously agreed to support the worldwide deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for luggage tracking. The AGM also called for the introduction of modern baggage notification standards to enable more accurate tracking of passenger baggage in real time at key stages of travel. It's a strategic decision that will revolutionize the aviation industry and ultimately aim to improve the customer experience.

Where does the project stand now ? What are the challenges for airlines and the benefits of setting up RFID?

The International Company of Aviation Telecommunication, (SITA or Société Internationale de Télécommunication Aéronautique) published its report entitled "Baggage IT Insights" at the end of April ruling on the implementation of RFID technology for baggage tracking and routing. This report reinforces the IATA 753 standard that came into force on June 1, 2018 for the implementation of RFID tags on baggage.

With its experience in the aviation sector, its label manufacturing and RFID expertise, Paragon ID is ideally placed to support airlines and airports in the implementation of IATA 753 resolution.
